Unanswered Prayers, 2024
Steel, gypsum cement
36cm x 76cm x  65cm

The installation explores the human need to be heard, echoing the medieval idea that the ear, as the last organ to die with the human body, is where the soul of a person resides. Three kneeling figures surround a pile of ears, referencing ritual amulets of ears used historically to encourage the gods to hear and answer pleas. The figures’ interactions with these cries for help, furthered by the rigid materiality of the steel, reveal the central idea of the artwork: that most people do not listen. The work proposes that by not hearing someone- truly hearing someone- the soul slowly deteriorates.
